A-LO-HA!
MMA…Mixed Martial Arts right? Not here!
Yes, most martial arts schools are switching to a more cumulative martial arts experience. Karate, Tae-Kwon-Do, Kempo, Kenpo, Jiu-Jitsu, Krav Maga, etc… They all offer something that is essential to self-defense.
But, there’s more to it than that.
I am a long participant in the martial arts, and the way I see it, this IS for everyone. Not just for physical fitness, that comes with the package. Not just for self-defense, that is included with purchase. No, this is more than martial arts.
If fitness, fun, and self-defense are all I am looking for, than I can get that anywhere. The true gem to seek is the martial arts schools that have that one thing…what we call OHANA.
Seeking a martial arts school is just the start, but we are talking about a community of people that act safe, stay safe, and are actively aware. The friends I have in the martial arts have seen my happiest times and my darkest times. This is my Ohana.
So, my ask today is that if you are seeking a sport, choose anything. But, if you are seeking a community, choose martial arts.
WE ARE MORE THAN MARTIAL ARTS, WE ARE FAMILY!
I’m 57, 6’1″ , a male, about 40 lbs overweight. I exercise often (lift weight, bike ride, punching bag) and feel in decent shape, but I have bad knees so I can’t run much. Am I too old to start Karate?
Thank you,
Dave
